Roofs for Troops

After more than 70 years, British troops are leaving Germany in one of the biggest moves undertaken by the Army in decades.

At MOD Stafford, contractor Lovell has built and delivered 346 homes as part of the overall £150m Project Borona redevelopment of the base that also saw new barracks accommodation as well as new offices, workshops, shops and leisure facilities. Just over 1,000 troops, plus their families, relocated to Stafford’s Beacon Barracks from the Rhine Garrison.

The Lovell contract was for the design, build and handover of 346 Service family homes to an unprecedented and demanding programme delivering 15 dwellings a week. This involved working collaboratively with its team of subcontractors and suppliers. Russell Roof Tiles was chosen as it was able to demonstrate its ability to meet the needs of the demanding and stringent programme without compromising on the quality of the product.

Staffordshire-based Russell Roof Tiles, the third largest roof tile manufacturer in the UK by volume and the only British roof tile manufacturer to achieve ‘excellent’ on BES 6001, are proud to have been supporting the project, supplying 350,000 Grampian tiles on a schedule which had to run with military precision to achieve strict deadlines.

This was a significant project for Russell Roof Tiles who at the end of last year, in support of British servicemen, presented a cheque for an impressive £8,000.00 to injured and returning troop support charity Help for Heroes.

Russell Roof Tiles supplied its Grampian flat interlocking roof tiles in slate grey, peat brown and cottage red. The Grampian combines the traditional appearance of slate with the security of an interlocking design and the sustainability and economy of concrete.
