Andy Murray doubles up with Seedrs to invest in ‘Netflix for magazines’
British tennis player Andy Murray has revealed the first five companies who will benefit from his personal investment as part of a partnership with crowdfunding platform Seedrs.
Amongst them is the UK digital platform for independent magazines, Readbug, which has been touted as the new ‘Netflix for magazines’.
The world number two has also stumped up undisclosed sums for four other UK startups, including:
- Oppo Ice Cream which was named startup of the year in 2015
- CommuterClub, the annual ticket subscription service
- Landbay, the peer-to-peer lender who recently announced a partnership with Zoopla
- We Are Colony who are a global film streaming platform.
The investments are the first of a number that Murray intends to make throughout the year, as part of a strategic relationship with Seedrs.
Equity crowdfunding platform Seedrs hopes to build on last year’s successes after recently breaking through the £100m investment barrier.
Commenting about this first set of investments, Murray said: “Giving recognition and support to British entrepreneurs is important to me, especially those who are the driving force behind growth-focused businesses.
“Every one of these entrepreneurs is inspirational and dedicated to their business and I’m excited to have invested in their team’s vision and work ethic.”
Jeff Lynn, CEO and co-founder of Seedrs, added: “It’s great to see Andy supporting British entrepreneurs so actively on Seedrs by investing in their businesses.
“Seedrs is now the most active seed-stage equity investor in the UK, and our continued growth and leading position in the market are testament to our reputation and the support from people like Andy.”
