TICE Wins National Creative & Cultural Skills Award

The North East’s organisation, This is Creative Enterprise (TICE), which supports young people who want to join the creative industry, have won the Design Skills award at the national Creative & Cultural Skills Awards Ceremony 2016.

The ceremony took place in Essex and was presented by Kanya King MBE (MOBO Awards) and Paul Latham (Live Nation). The Design Skills award was presented to TICE by John Mathers, Chief Executive at Design Council. TICE were awarded in recognition of their inspirational mentors who provide young people with the opportunity to work and learn within creative industries.

Jenny Barrett, Managing Director of TICE said: “’The ‘This is Creative Enterprise’ mentoring team are honoured and delighted to win the Design Skills award, celebrating the continued commitment and dedication across their respective creative industries.”

TICE specialises in delivering programmes to help young people aged 13 and over to develop their creative skills. The TICE programme started seven years ago with three schools and now runs across 15 in the North East region with over 450 students. It is exemplary at encouraging young people to really explore how they can use their creative talents and potentially forge a career path within the industry.

Jenny added: “All of the mentoring team are extremely passionate about their creative areas of specialism, bringing entrepreneurial inspiration and an abundance of creativity to the TICE programme. This award is a fabulous recognition for the team efforts and for the successful working partnerships we have established across industry and educational sectors.”

The TICE programme consists of theory based learning, workshops, industry visits, team building tasks and motivational guest speakers to give students informative but practical hands-on experience.

TICE engages with young people and businesses within the entire North East region, including Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Durham enhancing potential future business opportunities.

This is Creative Enterprise works with local, national and international companies who support and engage with TICE’s educational programmes.

This Is Creative Enterprise is delivered in three stages over the academic year - Bronze, Silver & Gold. The stages are a progressive route for students to be able to learn about the creative industries. The Bronze Stage offers an introduction to students into one or more creative industries. The Silver Stage takes students out of school and into the workplace and to further/higher educational institutions to experience the industry for themselves.

The Gold Stage involves a lot of additional work and dedication and so the students have to be sure it is for them. They are supported through a selection process which involves an interview with TICE. Throughout the Gold Stage, each student has three days to complete an industry-led project of their choice. Sponsored by numerous creative companies and mentored by the TICE team, the students aim to complete their challenges to present and / or perform at the summer final show.
