Eleven new Housing Zones to bring nearly 25,000 new affordable homes to London

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced eleven new regeneration Housing Zones that will aim to boost housebuilding and create new neighbourhoods across ten boroughs.

Stretching from Havering to Kingston and Enfield, the eleven new Housing Zones will provide 24,454 new homes following an additional £200m investment from the Mayor.

The addition of the new zones brings the total regeneration Housing Zones in the capital up to 31 which have designated the delivery of 77,000 new homes, 34% of which will fall under the government’s definition of affordable.

As part of the Mayor’s commitment to provide 100,000 new homes before the end of his tenure, London’s Housing Zones will unlock aim to unlock regeneration on hundreds of hectares of brownfield land across the capital.

Focusing on areas identified and packaged up by local authorities, the special status afforded to the new zones removes all unnecessary planning restrictions, along with injection of funds to fast track development of the homes and supporting infrastructure.

Commenting on the creation of the new Housing Zones, The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “Meeting the unprecedented demand for housing after 30 years of historic failure to build new homes is a critical issue affecting the capital.

“That is why I have led an enormous programme of regeneration with my 31 housing zones that will transform communities across London, creating nearly 80,000 new homes, plus new transport hubs and schools.”
