Easter surprise for region’s crayfish

Northumberland Wildlife Trust has received an early Easter gift in the form of £500 from Carillion’s Employee Nomination Fund.

At the end of 2015, Carillion employees selected 80 charities which they would like to see receive a one-off donation of £500, with the wildlife charity being one of them.

The money will be used to conserve the region’s endangered native white clawed crayfish.

Steve Lowe, Northumberland Wildlife Trust Head of Conservation said: “What a great surprise for the Trust - much better than an Easter egg, and it lasts longer! Needless to say we have many projects planned for this year, so the donation is most welcome.

“I’d also like to say a huge thank you to the staff at Carillion for nominating us; I’m a firm believer that we have many wildlife heroes amongst us and they really are helping to look after wildlife on our doorstep.”

Carillion has also donated over 50 tonnes of clay for the floor of the wildlife charity’s new Wildlife Discovery Centre on its Hauxley nature reserve.
