Sheffield’s Fulcrum wins first biogas contract since entering market

Fulcrum, the Sheffield-based independent energy and utilities provider, has secured its first biogas contract since entering the market, and has begun work on the installation of a 1.3km gas pipeline.

The project, which is being carried out on behalf of the main contractor, Burrell & Sons, will see the installation of a new pipeline to connect a £12m biogas plant to the UK distribution network at a site in Welbeck Colliery, Nottinghamshire.

A team of four engineers will be based at the Colliery for the length of the project, which is expected to takes eleven weeks, and will carry out excavation work and lay the pipeline.

Fulcrum traditionally designs and installs new gas and utility infrastructure to domestic properties and business premises to receive gas from the UK Gas network.

The new service sees Fulcrum’s installation process reversed to enable energy produced by biogas generators to be fed into the UK network via the installation of new gas infrastructure.

The UK Biogas industry is experiencing considerable growth and has expanded seven-fold since 2010 according the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA). With around 400 operational plants across the UK, the organisation also suggests there is scope for more than a thousand.

Martin Donnachie, CEO of Fulcrum, said: “There has been a positive reception for our expanded service provision from operators in the biogas industry, and we expect that this landmark agreement will be the first of many successful collaborations.

“Fulcrum has a wide variety of transferable skills, capabilities and has a wealth of experience working on large scale projects, with tight time constraints, all of which will ensure we prove to be a valuable addition to the industry.”
