Local housebuilder delivers talk to primary school

A housebuilder and archaeological practice have given a talk to students at a local primary school, following the discovery of significant archaeological artefacts at a new Selby housing development. David Wilson Homes and MAP Archaeological Practice delivered the talk to students at Barlby Community Primary School, which focused on the details of the findings and what life was like in 2nd-4th century Britain.

The talk followed archaeological discoveries at David Wilson Homes’ new Barley Fields development in North Yorkshire. Dating back to the fourth century, the findings include the footprints of buildings associated with the ancient Roman Imperial Cult. Archaeologists have also uncovered the suspected remains of a hypocaust, an ancient Roman heating system often associated with the bath houses of the time, as well as tent pegs, leather sandals and large amounts of Roman pottery.

Paula Ware, Managing Director at MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd., commented: “It was a delight to speak to the students of Barlby Community Primary School about our findings and what these might tell us about the past inhabitants of the area. These findings are likely to be very significant for discovering more about life during the 2nd-4th centuries, and it was fantastic to be able to share this new discovery with the children of Barlby Community Primary School.”
