New 9,500 sq ft rooftop restaurant a “game-changer” for Manchester

Restaurant group D&D has been revealed as the operator of a new rooftop restaurant at No.1 Spinningfields in Manchester.

The firm behind London restaurants Bluebird, German Gymnasium and Quaglino’s is establishing a 9,500 sq ft eatery and bar on the roof of developer Allied London’s new 260,000 sq ft commercial building.

D&D, which also operates the Guastavino’s restaurant in New York and Alcazar in Paris, expanded into the North’s culinary scene most recently with the launch of Angelica and Crafthouse in Leeds.

The new site at Spinningfields will sit within No.1 Spinningfields’ rooftop garden terrace.

Michael Ingall, the chief executive of Allied London, said: “D&D is the perfect operator for this space and a game-changer for Spinningfields and Manchester.

“With numerous superb operations in London as well as restaurants in Paris, New York and Tokyo - and two Michelin stars, D&D is a quality operation in every sense of the word.”

He added: “We are delighted they have chosen No.1 Spinningfields as their first restaurant in Manchester.”

Currently the biggest commercial building under construction in Manchester, once complete No.1 Spinningfields will be the city’s tallest building in 50 years.

Earlier this year, law firm Squire Patton Boggs announced plans to establish a 27,500 sq ft office within the development.

D&D London’s chairman and CEO, Des Gunewardena, commented: “Expansion in Northern England continues to be a significant part of our group’s growth strategy and this announcement reflects that.

“Manchester is a fantastic city and we have watched closely over the last few years the resurgence of the restaurant scene in the city and in Spinningfields in particular.”

Andrea George, the commercial director at Allied London, is confident D&D’s new venue will serve to strengthen the area’s dining offer.

She said: “Food and drink at Spinningfields is going from strength to strength and D&D coming to No.1 Spinningfields signals a huge change for dining in the city, paving the way for our new St. John’s neighbourhood and London Road Fire Station.”

The Spinningfields restaurant, which will be D&D’s first in Manchester and its fourth in the UK outside London, is due to open in Autumn 2017.
