FinTech firm named ‘UK’s fastest growing tech company’ sets up Australia base
Mobile money transfer service WorldRemit has announced it is to set up a new Asia-Pacific base in Australia.
The FinTech firm, which was named the UK’s fastest growing tech company by Deloitte last year, have also appointed Michael Liu to head up its new Asia-Pacific operation as Regional Director.
WorldRemit helps migrant workers send money back home through its app, allowing users to receive money transfers directly to their phone without having to use foreign exchange bureaus.
By setting up a base in Australia, the firm hopes to build on the 80,000 transfers a month coming from WorldRemit customers in the country, making it the London-headquartered tech firm’s second largest market after the UK.
Ismail Ahmed, CEO and founder of WorldRemit, said: “Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region play a critical role in our global expansion plans. Michael Liu’s deep knowledge of and connections with the financial sector will be invaluable as we cement our position as the leading digital money transfer service worldwide.”
Michael Liu, Regional Director for Asia-Pacific, WorldRemit, commented: “WorldRemit is a service that helps an often overlooked segment of the Australian population – the one in four people who have migrated here from overseas.
“I am excited to be part of a strong, fast-growing business that is also making a positive impact on financial inclusion and migrant lives.”
