Liverpool council seeks businesses for citybike sponsorship deal

Liverpool City Council is seeking sponsors for citybike, its bicycle hire initiative.

The authority is hoping to find companies to sponsor the hire scheme, under which 1,000 bikes are currently available, and support Liverpool’s goal of becoming England most active core city by 2021.

Since its launch in 2014, the scheme has clocked up close to 150k rentals, around 18k unique users and over 30k subscriptions. The initiative’s bikes have so far travelled around 700k miles.

Nick Kavanagh, the authority’s Director for Regeneration, said: “This is a relatively new initiative, so to be this successful in less than two years is a real achievement, and just goes to show there is a real appetite from residents and visitors to get around the city using sustainable transport.

“It’s a simple scheme to be part of, and the user-friendly bikes make it easy for people to travel round the city, whether you’re a commuter, tourist or out for the day with the family.”

He continued: “We are looking for an organisation which can invest in citybike and help us take the scheme to the next level and at the same time champion cycling and a healthy, active lifestyle in Liverpool.”

According to the council, the citybike station at Vine Court, near the University of Liverpool, is the scheme’s most popular.
