Students Hit Target For Software Career
Two talented Barnsley College students join local successful software company, Target to gain valuable work experience to pursue career in Software Development.
Part of the top three on their course, Ashley Sherwood, 20 and Ceirion Wheatman, 20 will be working alongside the software development team on upcoming live projects to gain industry training whilst studying for a Higher National Diploma in Computing and Systems Development at University Campus Barnsley.
Based at the Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre, Target are keen to help and nurture local talent to provide a career path and build valuable job-specific skills that are desirable in the IT industry.
Technical Director, Daryl Greensill at Target said, “Ashley and Ceirion approached us for a work experience opportunity after our visit at the campus; The work which they are both currently producing on the course is at an impressive level and they both show great potential to excel in the industry. With their talent as well as passion and enthusiasm for a career in software development, we believed they deserved the opportunity to be able work and learn alongside our team.”
Daryl and Senior Software Developer, Shaun Bellis had previously visited and spoken to the students about their past and present projects; to provide insights into the industry and the skills Target would look for in potential software developers.
Ashley Sherwood of Redbrook said, “I was really impressed with the projects Target had been a part of. Daryl and Shaun gave a good insight into what it was like working at the company and I wanted to understand more about the development side of the systems they had created for their clients. Gaining experience in a more practical environment is exactly what I wanted.”
Ceirion Wheatman of Shafton said, “I want to continue my education and gain a degree in Software Engineering and the opportunity to work at Target during my studies is helping build additional skills I can continue to apply in my future and hopefully when I become a Senior Software Developer.”
The two students will be working with a team of five software developers over the course of twenty days as part of their work placement in relation to their employability and professional development unit.
Target design and provide specialist UK developed software management systems globally to companies such as Coca-Cola Enterprises, Kier Group and Pret A Manger, to enable greater business efficiencies through providing solutions for the data management challenges businesses face.
