Cash boost for Easington Colliery brass band

A regional housebuilder has gifted £1,000 to help celebrate the mining heritage of a local community.

Easington Colliery Brass Band received the donation from Persimmon Homes Durham as part of its year-long initiative to support local communities.

In an effort to preserve the northern heritage of the brass band’s association with mining traditions, the money will be used to buy new uniforms. The band, which established itself in 1915, is preparing to play at concerts around the North East and Yorkshire to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the colliery disaster.

Peter Lawson, a spokesman for Easington Colliery Brass Band, said: “We can’t thank Persimmon Homes enough for this generous donation. The band is extremely proud of their mining roots and is keen to promote the colliery at every concert they perform at.”

Christine Cooper, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Durham said: “We are delighted to donate money to a cause that is close to the hearts of people in the local community.

“We understand that the band’s current uniforms are over 15 years old, so we know this funding will be put to good use. We hope to continue our work with the local community to preserve the rich history of Easington for many years to come.”
