Israeli startup Sirin Labs secures $72m funding ahead of London launch
An Israeli startup has raised $72m for the development of a military-grade smartphone ahead of its London launch next month.
Sirin Labs, which is opening a flagship store in the capital in May, will use the eight-figure venture capital boost to launch Solarin – a mobile phone that aims to combine the privacy and security of a military device with the functionality of an everyday phone.
The company was founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs Moshe Hogeg and Tal Cohen, along with Kazakh investor Kenges Rakishev.
According to TechCrunch, Moshe said: “It won’t be the most expensive phone in the world. We are in the neighborhood of $10-15k per phone. Tesla is a good example for us.
“They started with high priced cars, but today their car prices are much lower.”
Speaking further, Moshe said that as “tech lovers”, he and his fellow Sirin Labs founders wanted to incorporate “the most sophisticated tech out there” into a smartphone.
He continued: “91% of Fortune 500 companies are under cyber attacks, but companies can’t use a military phone because they usually lack all the apps that consumers use.”
