Our constitution, devolution and the Northern Powerhouse

The Government has outlined plans to give more powers to northern city regions to create a Northern Powerhouse.

Discover what is proposed for the North East’s future, and put your questions to James Wharton MP, Northern Powerhouse Minister, and Conservative MP for Stockton South, when he gives a free public lecture at the University of Sunderland.

James Wharton was first elected as MP for Stockton South in 2010. He read law at Durham University before training to be a solicitor with a regional firm, working in Newcastle, Durham and Darlington. He was named Northern Powerhouse Minister in 2015.

The Northern Powerhouse will result in powers for areas such as housing, transport and health being devolved to “Core Cities” including Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle. It’s estimated that this plan to rebalance the UK economy will bring £18bn into the region by 2030.

The lecture - Our constitution, devolution and the Northern Powerhouse, takes place at Murray Library Lecture Theatre, City Campus, on Friday, 29 April, at 6.30pm.

Tickets are free but must be booked in advance via the University Online Store.

The talk is part of the University of Sunderland’s ongoing Public Lecture series, now in its fourth year, aiming to inform and entertain, as well as stimulate debate, by providing access to internationally renowned speakers who are leaders in their field.
