Young visual artists unveil unique sculpture proposals

Nine artists from the North East will unveil their ideas for a brand new sculpture this weekend as part of the Gillian Dickinson North East Young Sculptor of the Year in partnership with Cheeseburn Sculpture.

The exhibition, opening on Saturday 30 April will feature sculptural models from each of the artists to demonstrate their ideas for a new piece of art to be installed at Cheeseburn early next year. The exhibition is open to the public over the bank holiday weekend and organisers are encouraging visitors to vote for their favourite either in person at the exhibition or online on the Cheeseburn Facebook page.

“The quality of the proposals from our nine shortlisted artists is fantastic,” commented Cheeseburn curator Matthew Jarratt, “each artist was awarded £300 and mentoring to support them in developing their proposal in preparation for this exhibition and we’re hoping that people from the region will come to Cheeseburn to see the work of these talented young artists.”

Cheeseburn Sculpture will be open to the public from 11am - 4pm each day of the bank holiday weekend and visitors can find the Gillian Dickinson North East Young Sculptor of the Year exhibition in the Stables Gallery. It is the one of two weekends during which visitors can see and vote for their favourite Young Artist, with Cheeseburn opening it’s doors for a second time on Saturday 28 - Monday 30 May, after which the winning artist will be announced.

In addition to the Young Sculptor of the Year exhibition of proposals, Cheeseburn will show over twenty new sculptures this spring with a growing collection of works by artists who are based in the North East or who have creative links with the area.

New works for 2016 include, Diachroic glass installation by Laura Johnston (who has made many architectural glass commissions in the region), 4 granite carvings by Fred Watson (based in rural Northumberland), Abstract marble sculptures by Luke Dickinson, 3 abstract steel works Gareth Griffiths (based in Yorkshire), Marble sculpture by Ekkehard Altenburger (who has made large scale commission at Gateshead Hospital), Stone still life carving by Colin Wilbourn (based in Sunderland), Bronze and ceramic works by Lisa Delarney (based in Gateshead).
