Barkers offers bags of support for cancer charity

NORTHALLERTON shoppers can bag a bargain and a cuppa in the name of charity at family-owned department store, Barkers.

Barkers is launching a Handbags and Teabags fundraiser for customers to swap their old bag for a 10 percent discount voucher to use towards a new one from their 2016 spring/summer range.

The old bags, which will be collected in an in-store container, will them be sold in Northallerton’s two Cancer Research shops.

The handbag amnesty runs until May 31, and it is hoped the initiative will help the charity to raise vital funds.

On the last day of the event, the department store will host a tea party in aid of Cancer Research UK in the new Barkers Kitchen. Proceeds from every hot drink sold in the morning will be donated to the charity.

Accessories buyer Kate McCain said: “It is the time of year when women are choosing a new handbag for spring or summer and many have wardrobes full of handbags that are still in great condition.

“Donating quality handbags, which are still in good condition, is a great way to recycle them and raise vital funds for a great charity.

“Once handbags have been given to us, we will reward customers with a voucher to save money on their new purchase from our new range of handbags.

“All the handbags we collect will then be handed over to the Cancer Research Shop in Northallerton.

“We expect this to be very popular with our customers, who are both generous and supportive of the work we do for charity.”

Barkers’ exciting new handbag collections include Armani Jeans, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Radley and Orla Kiely.

Jayne Lister, from Cancer Research shop, said: “We are always very short of good quality handbags and they are popular items among customers.

“This is a wonderful gesture by Barkers and will help us to raise a lot of money for charity.”
