IoT energy innovator Drayson Technologies closes seven-figure Series B funding round

London-based Drayson Technologies has closed an £8m Series B funding round that will help it further develop its ‘Freevolt’ Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

The startup, which was founded by former UK science minister Lord Paul Drayson, drew investment from current investors Landsdowne Partners and Oxford’s Woodford Investment Management, bringing total cash invested to £26m to date.

Drayson are currently perfecting their ‘Freevolt’ energy technology, an innovative technique which harvests power from RF signals, including mobile 2G, 3G and 4G signals, to help drive the new generation of IoT sensors and wearable tech without the need for charging.

Drawing on research stretching back to the 1960s, the technology has become more viable in recent years thanks to the proliferation of RF signals from mobile devices and Wi-Fi routers.

Freevolt technology is already utilised in the CleanSpace Tag, an air pollution sensor that draws on ambient RF signals for power, but the tech has potential to be utilised in a wide-range of contexts, including smart city innovations and digital health.

Speaking to Tech City News, Lord Drayson said: “Since the launch of our Freevolt technology last year we have seen tremendous interest in its application to power the growing numbers of connected devices being deployed as the third wave of internet connectivity gathers momentum.

“This investment will enable us to capitalise on this opportunity and position the Company to be at the forefront of powering the Internet of Things (IoT).”
