Six London pub favourites to go as part of JD Wetherspoon cull

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon is looking to dispose of six of its London pubs as part of a nationwide cull that could see 45 drinking holes sold across city centres and towns in the UK.

Real estate advisor CBRE and estate agents Savills have both been appointed by the UK public house brand to find buyers, either individually or as a package, for the sites, many of which sit in prominent locations in some of the UK’s major cities.

In total, 23 of the pubs included in the sale are situated in London and the South, with six of the capital’s Wetherspoon pubs represented in the portfolio that is up for grabs, a number of which are housed within historic buildings.

These include the Tally Ho in North Finchley, situated in a former staging post that has been on the site since 1830; The Railway in Putney which occupies the former Putney Hotel built in 1886 and Hammersmith’s Plough and Harrow which sits on a site that has been occupied since 1409.

Other pubs in Wetherspoon’s London line-up that are also up for sale include the Glass Works at Islington, the Oyster Rooms in Fulham and the Capitol Pub in Forest Hill.

While there is the possibility that the pubs will be put to other uses after they have been sold, a spokesperson for the joint venture was keen to point out that buyers from the hospitality sector were anticipated, due to the geographical location and local reputation of the establishments on offer.

They added: “The portfolio represents an excellent opportunity to acquire high volume businesses with strong food sales in established locations which are fitted to an extremely high standard. We therefore anticipate a broad range of interest from pub, bar and restaurant groups.”
