Dedicated Dad ‘rowing; the extra mile for charity

NEWCASTLE man Philip Pugh challenged the public to a row-a-thon and raised hundreds of pounds for local outdoor adventure charity, Calvert Trust Kielder.

The challenge, which saw Philip and his team taking up residence on Newcastle’s Northumberland Street for the day, resulted in more than 15,000 metres rowed and some vital training for the team as they prepare to row the Gibraltar Straits in June for Phil’s 62nd birthday in aid of Calvert Trust Kielder.

This latest tough physical test is Philip’s third birthday challenge, after he successfully swam the English Channel as part of a five man relay for his 60th birthday and last year cycled America’s Route 66 in just 25 days for his 61st birthday.

Phil said: “This third challenge is to support and assist people who have special needs and want a challenge in their lives.

Calvert Trust Kielder can provide this through fun physical activities giving people like my son Tom, who has cerebral palsy, wonderful opportunities and outdoor adventures.

“Me and my team - Alex Pugh, Katie Elliot and James McKenzie, have all worked really hard in preparation for this challenge and really value everyone’s support. We’re doing it so we can help others that need our help to reach their goals.” The challenge was supported with equipment and staff from Pure Gym.
