London dominates list of UK’s fastest growing boroughs

The rate of population growth in London is set to outstrip the rest of the country in the next decade, according to forecasts released today by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Projections peg the capital’s population growth at 13.7% over the next ten years to mid-2024, higher than the 8.9% and 8.1% growth predicted for the East and South East respectively, and eclipsing the 3.1% jump estimated for the North East of England.

This represents an extra 1.16m people living in the capital by 2024 as the population swells to over 9.7m, and is predicted to be a big chunk of 7.5% overall increase in the population nationwide.

Unsurprisingly, the figures also mean that London boroughs dominate the top 10 of fastest growing local authorities in the same period, with Tower Hamlets expected to house an extra 71,000 people within the next 10 years.

Barking and Dagenham (19.7% growth), Newham (17.4%) and Camden (17.3%) are also predicted to undergo explosive population increases, with only Corby in Northamptonshire the non-London representative on the list.

Suzie Dunsmith, Population Projections Unit at the ONS, commented: “All regions of England are projected to see an increase in their population size over the next decade, with London, the East of England and South East projected to grow faster than the country as a whole.

“The population is also ageing with all regions seeing a faster growth in those aged 65 and over than in younger age groups.”
