Stockport store tests multi-talented Martin-Brooks

Versatile roofing specialists, Martin-Brooks, have been called upon to give an old department store a new lease of life.

Flat roofing, slate and lead experts from the Sheffield-based firm collaborated to refurbish the sprawling, complex roof on the former Co-operative building in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Working with main contractor, T. Sloyan and Sons, Martin-Brooks overhauled 1,400 square metres of Westmorland slate, re-felted and insulated a 500 square metre flat roof and replaced various lead dormers and centre valley gutters on the store, which is now used by a high street fashion retailer. New sheet metal cladding was also added to the plant room walls.

Located on Chestergate in the centre of Stockport, the particularly decorative building is topped with distinctive domes and a clock tower. Work on the £130,000 roof refurbishment took Martin-Brooks four months to complete and formed part of a large scale project to rectify previous dilapidation.

John Elmore, Martin-Brooks’ managing director, said: “Maintaining a structure as multifaceted as this Stockport store requires the input of various trades. Because we have so many skills in house, our client was able to contract out all of the roofing works to one firm, making it easier to plan and coordinate the repairs, which ultimately saved time and money. We liaised closely with T. Sloyan throughout the project to ensure this interesting piece of retail history is protected and preserved.”
