London Chambers of Commerce urges Government to make airport expansion top priority

A London business organization is urging the Government to make the expansion of Heathrow Airport its first priority following the EU Referendum.

London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has stated that following the vote on 23rd June, the Government must respond to the recommendations of the Airports Commission.

The LCCI has been a strong supporter of the London airport expansion, which David Cameron previously promised by the end of 2015. However, last December the Government delayed the final decision over a third runway until this summer.

At the time, the government decided that further work was needed on the Airports Commission’s report in terms of air quality and greenhouse gases.

LCCI believes that Heathrow should get the green light for third runway because the airport is already operating a successful hub.

Colin Stanbridge, chief executive of LCCI, said: “Government has been ‘on-hold’ for the past couple of months. And as a result many big decisions have been delayed.

“There are no more excuses to delay a new runway decision - and one of the most crucial decisions for the sake of London and the UK economy”.

“The Referendum result is due on Friday 24th June, this should be followed by a clear decision on which airport location will be allowed to expand”.
