Barratt Yorkshire West continues investment in future

Local construction students from Bradford College paid a visit to Barratt Homes’ St Andrew’s View development in Morley, Leeds, to gain hands on experience to couple with the theory behind their course.

Fifteen students aged between 16 and 19 visited the site to see learnings from their Level 1 Diploma in Brickwork and Plastering course put into practice, allowing them to further understand the brickwork and plastering stages involved with housebuilding.

The site visit further strengthens the on-going relationship between Barratt and local universities and colleges, which also sees the housebuilder collaborate with Sheffield Hallam University as part of its sponsored construction degree.

The students that attended the visit to St Andrew’s View represent bright young minds joining the construction industry and have been specifically selected for the CE:BE Brickwork and Plastering programme because of their prior academic ability and exceptional performance during a CE:BE selection day.

Mark Oates, Contracts Manager at Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, commented:

“It was great to be able to provide the students with the opportunity to come along to the development and get some on site experience, allowing them to put some of the knowledge and techniques they’ve learned as part of their education, into practice. We have strong relationships with local colleges and universities, and are committed to continuing the students’ learning on site and attracting the very best talent to a career with Barratt Homes.

Stephen Seymour, Project Lead for the ‘Centres of Excellence for the Built Environment’ (CE:BE) Programme, commented:

“For the construction industry to thrive, we need skilled construction professionals who can support us in building top quality homes, and we hope that the visit showcases to students exactly what career opportunities housebuilding can provide”.

“The CE:BE programme gives young people studying construction based qualifications a unique opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into a practical working context. This is facilitated by the scheme’s associate partners, who voluntarily offer a variety of enrichment activities, which adds real value to the current construction craft curriculums. Consequently, companies like Barratt Homes are an invaluable asset to the continued success of the CE:BE programme”.

The CE:BE is a business and education partnership funded by Bradford Council and is a joint initiative between four educational providers - Bradford College, Carlton Bolling College, Tong High School and Grange Technical College.

St Andrew’s View is a sought-after development of homes in the market town of Morley. It benefits from a great range of local amenities in Morley town centre, as well as excellent transport links via the M62 and public transport services, making this location ideal for commuters.
