Care Home Residents Set To Remember Wartime Derby
A group of care home residents were today transported back to 1940’s Derby in celebration of National Care Home Open Day, where wartime afternoon tea and memories of times once passed became the order of the day.
The event organised by Milford Care, took place on June 17th between 2-6pm, at The Meadows Care Home in Alfreton, and saw 60 residents, and staff don wartime fancy dress whilst enjoying a period themed afternoon tea.
By engaging residents to recall memories of their personal life stories, the event provided a talking point between residents, with many of them sharing personal wartime stories with each other.
Sarah Peck, activities coordinator at The Meadows Care Home, said: “The day provided the perfect backdrop for giving the residents a great day of entertainment that took them back to when they were younger. The residents were dancing, and really letting their hair down!”
Accompanying the scones and clotted cream, residents were even entertained by a singer for two hours who provided wartime melodies to aid remembrance.
In its fourth year, National Care Home Open Day celebrates the great things that care homes do all year round, and this year will took the form of open days incorporating themes such as the Queen’s 90th birthday, the Olympics in Rio or even the European Football Championships.
The Minister for Community and Social Care, Alistair Burt MP said: “National Care Home Open Day is an important opportunity to celebrate the unwavering and dedicated efforts of the people who work in the sector, and to invite our local communities to experience first-hand the contribution care professionals make to supporting older and vulnerable people.”
Pierre Falleth, director at Milford Care said: “This year, The Meadows Care Home has pulled out all of the stops to remember 1940’s Derby. Our staff and residents have all had a fantastic day and some of the wartime stories told were truly fascinating. We hope that this national day will highlight the measures taken by care homes such as ours to ensure the comfort of residents.”
