Jones Bros’ and Balfour Beatty scoop award for considerate construction at Wales’s largest onshore wind farm

Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty have been applauded nationally for their work as considerate constructors on Wales’s largest onshore wind farm, raising the bar for the construction industry.

The partnership scooped silver in the Considerate Constructors Scheme 2016 National Site Award for its work on the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project, a site described by judges as a ‘credit to the scheme.’

The award recognises the efforts of the project’s developers to be considerate towards the public, its workforce and the environment.

The project, which stretches over the borders of Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf, was assessed against five criteria including respect for the community, care about appearance, protecting the environment, safety and valuing the workforce.

Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty, contracted by Vattenfall to deliver the construction civil and electrical works for the 76-turbine Pen y Cymoedd wind farm, on the Natural Resources Wales Managed Estate, have now successfully completed phase one of the multi-million pound development.

Eryl Roberts, project manager for the joint venture, said the award recognised the efforts of all workers on site to respect the local community.

“We’ve all worked extremely hard to ensure that the Pen y Cymoedd site has been as considerate and safe as possible for the surrounding communities, the environment and our workforce,” he said. “It’s terrific to be acknowledged in this way.”

Mike Petter, chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, said: “It is our privilege to reward the efforts of all those involved in projects which set the bar high in terms of considerate construction. We never fail to be impressed each year by the high levels of innovation and excellence evidenced throughout the industry.

“Each award-winning project serves as a shining example to the industry as to what can be achieved across a range of different-sized projects and in all sectors of the industry.”
