Record passenger numbers soar as Doncaster Sheffield Airport sees busiest April and May
Doncaster Sheffield Airport welcomed a record number of passengers this April and May.
The busiest April and May in the airport’s history has been achieved due to a mix of the eight new Flybe routes, which started earlier this year, growth with incumbent airlines and the opening of Great Yorkshire Way link road.
The Great Yorkshire Way, a £56m link road from junction 3 of the M18 to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, has seen journey times from Sheffield to the airport cut to just 25 minutes.
Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We are on track for record growth and this is fantastic news for the Sheffield City Region. A thriving region needs a thriving airport and as the latest figures show, we are beginning to achieve this.
“In terms of leisure, people have really started to embrace Doncaster Sheffield Airport as their local airport and are showing their support by travelling from here whenever possible.”
More than 200,000 passengers travelled from Doncaster Sheffield Airport over the two-month period.
“Flights to Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin have been welcomed by the business community who are now beginning to use the airport as a gateway to the world.
“A recent conversation with a Sheffield based business women highlighted this, she now travels from Doncaster to Dubai via Amsterdam and she couldn’t be happier. It is fantastic for us to hear that people are able to do their business travel easier thanks to the new routes we have brought to the region.
“We are working closely with the business community via our extremely supportive Chambers of Commerce, business networking events and advocacy groups. It’s important for boosting the region’s international connectivity that whenever possible businesses make the decision to support their local airport for business travel.
“With the new route to Dusseldorf starting at the end of October, we have added yet another business travel route to meet the needs of our business community.
“The latest CAA figures show that we have achieved a growth of more than 40 percent growth on the year to date and that puts us in the top three airports in the UK for growth.”
Gill added: “Our work doesn’t stop here. We have these new routes, extra seats and now reach more than 40 destinations, we need to ensure that passengers from our region are using these and when they are making their travel choices that Doncaster Sheffield Airport is their first thought.”
