EU Referendum: Londoners back remain despite Brexit

The people of London overwhelmingly backed remaining in the European Union in yesterday’s referendum, despite the nation voting for Brexit.

Of the capital’s 33 boroughs, 28 backed remaining in the EU, representing a total of 2.2m votes compared to 1.7m people who voted for leave.

The remaining five boroughs, including Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Bexley, Sutton and Hillingdon all followed the trend nationally in returning a leave vote.

With voter turnout in London expected to hit almost 70%, mirroring the hefty turnout at national level, it has been a vote that has galvanized the nation and is sure to have significant short and long-term repercussions,

Markets are already reacting to the result, with the pound falling to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985.
