Firing Up The Fyers For Festival

An award-winning fish and chip shop is preparing to fire up the fryers for one of South Tyneside’s biggest events.

Colmans, which has been based at Ocean Road, South Shields since 1926, is now gearing up for a busy summer season, serving not only its regular customers but the influx of tourists expected for the South Tyneside Festival 2016.

Highlights at the festival, which offers free events and activities throughout June, July and August, include the popular Sunday Concert series at Bents Park, South Shields which Colmans is proud to be sponsoring for the second consecutive year.

“The South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concert series has become a highlight of the borough’s summer calendar, attracting more than 77,500 visitors in 2015 alone,” said Richard Ord, owner of Colmans.

“Colmans are delighted to be supporting the event again this year and hope that everybody has a fantastic time. Who knows, maybe even one of the star performers will stop by to enjoy our world famous fish and chips.”

South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concert series 2016 will feature headline appearances by X Factor favourites Alexandra Burke, Ben Haenow and Reggie ‘N’ Bollie (July 10), as well as The Proclaimers (July 17), Tony Hadley (July 24) and UB40 (July 31).

It is being organised by South Tyneside Council and sponsored by Colmans, Port of Tyne, Zeera Indian Cuisine and NCS (National Citizen Service), with support from BBC Newcastle.

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said: “Colmans have been strong supporters of the South Tyneside Festival for many years and it’s great to see visitors queuing for their award-winning fish and chips both before, and after, each of our events.

“I would like to thank them and our other sponsors for their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm and look forward to the Sunday Concert series getting underway next month.”

Gates for each of South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concerts will open at around 1pm on the date specified, with an enhanced food and drink offering, including craft ales, Pimms and prosecco, available throughout the day.
