Durham poised to boost city centre independents next week
Durham Business Improvement District (BID) is putting the town’s independent business at its forefront next week, hosting a week long local shopping celebration.
Independents InDurham, set to run from the 2nd to the 8th July, will support independent business owners and retailers across the city centre.
Adam Deathe, Business Engagement Manager at Durham BID, said: “Durham is an incredible city; we have an amazing range and number of unique independent businesses which complement the big-name brands, and help to set our city apart from other high streets up and down the country.
“Independents InDurham is a great way to remind everyone what’s available right on their doorstep. There’s a really varied mix of independent businesses offering everything from fashion, homeware and legal services, to holidays, homes and food and drink.
“These businesses are passionate about what they do and this is a great opportunity for us all to visit Durham city and support them and our local economy too.”
With a number of businesses offering discounts over the week, this is the second year in a row Durham BID has run Independents InDurham.
Independent businesses have a significant impact on local and regional economies. Independent businesses in Britain are employing 12.4 million people, and it is suggested that for every £1 spent with a local, independent business, around 70p circulates back into that local economy, compared with around 40p for large businesses.
Adam added: “Across the week we’ll be doing all we can to remind visitors, shoppers and everyone living locally that Durham’s diverse retailers and services combined with its rich heritage, make it a fantastic centre for running errands or even as a great day out with family and friends.”
“Our independent retailers will have access to window stickers with the Independents InDurham logo so you can easily spot these terrific businesses during your visit to the city and show your support over the week and when visiting Durham in the future too.”
