Care Home Residents Hula Hoop To Hawaii In Latest Event

A group of care home residents from Ashbourne have been touring the globe once a month as part of a ‘food around the world’ celebration, with the latest destination being Hawaii.

The event, organised by Ashbourne Lodge, part of the Milford Care Group, took place 2-5pm on June 18th at the Ashbourne-based care home, where all 49 residents, alongside staff, experienced a beach paradise in the care home where they all reside.

Staff donned grass hula skirts and beach shorts, whilst flower garlands were given to residents and visitors so that they could adopt the chosen theme.

The care home created a Hawaiian paradise by providing a beach setting with sand, paddling pools and inflatable palm trees.

The fun-filled afternoon also included Hawaiian themed food, with the care home providing a BBQ, fruit kebabs, alcoholic and non-alcoholic fruit punch and even an ice cream van.

Jim Watt, home manager, said: “We are actually doing the theme nights once a month, we have a map in the care home and we try to pick somewhere fun and interesting to make each event unique.

“We have already organised an Indian and Mexican themed afternoon, but the Hawaiian event was a big hit.”

The event encouraged residents to get involved in a range of activities, with hula hooping games, a holiday hamper raffle and steel band music, ensuring that there was something different to entertain everyone who took part.

The residents’ next stop is Spain on June 29th.

Jim added: “We hope that our upcoming Spanish event will be just as successful. It is a bit of fun for everyone as the residents, visitors and staff get to join in and do something different for a day.”

Pierre Falleth, director at Milford Care, said: “Regular events like this are important to us, as they allow our residents the opportunity to reminisce about past holidays or get a taste of something new.”
