Sainsbury’s to create 20 jobs with new store at Stockport Exchange
Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is set to create at least 20 jobs with the launch of a new store at Stockport Exchange.
The 4,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s Local shop will be located opposite Stockport’s railway station, on the ground floor of a 50,000 sq ft Grade A office building.
Currently under construction, the five-storey office forms part of phase two of the Stockport Exchange scheme being delivered by urban regeneration firm Muse Developments in partnership with Stockport Council.
The second phase will also create a 115-bed Holiday Inn Express and new public space. Additionally, the road layout in front of the station is being revamped to improve access and offer a dedicated drop-off point.
Muse’s development director, Wes Erlam, said: “It’s excellent news that Sainsbury’s has chosen Stockport Exchange for a new convenience store.
“This is a testament to the development’s ideal location next to a busy transport hub, right in the heart of the town’s commercial quarter.”
He added: “The new store will add to the amenities available for office workers, hotel guests and commuters and is a key milestone in establishing the scheme as a new place to work and visit, and as a gateway to Stockport town centre and the wider region.”
The phase two office building is due to complete in October, with the Sainsbury’s Local store opening in November and the hotel in December.
Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, Cllr Kate Butler, commented: “I’m delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s to Stockport Exchange.
“Having them opening as part of the development is great news, and the store will be a fantastic addition to the scheme as well as our town centre.”
She added: “It is amazing to see how work at Stockport Exchange is pressing ahead and how this area of our town centre is being transformed.”
Stockport Exchange comes as part of the council’s £1 billion Investing in Growth programme. Once complete, it will have delivered up to 375,000 sq ft of office space and 28,000 sq ft of commercial space. Phase one of the development, a multi-storey car park with space for 1,000 vehicles, was finished in 2014 and is now open.
Commercial real estate firms CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield are joint agents on the scheme.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s commented: “We are extremely pleased to be opening a new store at Stockport Exchange, and look forward to welcoming our first customers later this year.”
