SES Engineering Services unlocks Barnsley Custody Suite contract

Leading national engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services, has secured a £1.4m contract to deliver mechanical and electrical (M&E) services on South Yorkshire Police’s new state-of-the-art Barnsley Custody Suite.

The 20 cell suite will be located on Churchfield and form part of Barnsley Police Headquarters, replacing the existing suite on the site. The scheme is a key aspect of the force’s major £19m investment project to improve custody facilities across South Yorkshire.

Working in close collaboration with lead contractor Wilmott Dixon and South Yorkshire Police, SES will be responsible for completing the design and the supply and installation of a range of M&E services, including ventilation, air conditioning, heating and lighting.

The contract win follows SES’ successful completion of the £2.7m M&E contract on South Yorkshire Police’s flagship custody facility in Sheffield, which was delivered on time and on budget earlier this year.

Continuing on the success of the Sheffield project, SES and the project team will once again be maximizing the use of pioneering Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology. The digital engineering technology will enable the teams to significantly reduce material costs, time and waste as well as improving efficiency and sustainability.

Steve Joyce, Regional Director, Yorkshire and North East commented: “Given that the high-security custody suite and its 20 cells will be in use 24 hours a day seven days a week, it’s vital that we deliver a faultless engineering services solution.

“Having worked together superbly on the Sheffield and Rotherham Custody Suite, we’re delighted to be able to transfer our skills and maintain our excellent relationship with South Yorkshire Police and Wilmott Dixon on the Barnsley project.

“These South Yorkshire Police Custody Suites are setting a new benchmark in UK public sector building and we are very proud to be working on this innovative and prestigious project.”

Paula Ibberson, Programme Manager, South Yorkshire Police commented: “M&E was the biggest area of risk we needed to address in the replacement of our old estate. Working with SES on Sheffield has ensured that we have delivered a sustainable building, which meets the strict requirements set by the Home Office whilst also reducing our ongoing revenue costs. It is great to see the learning from Sheffield being captured and deployed in Barnsley. “

“The Barnsley scheme is of a smaller scale but is infinitely more complex. The new suite is attached to an existing Police building, which remains live throughout the works. Willmott Dixon and SES have invested a great deal of time and energy in advance of the site works to ensure they understood the requirements to make new and old work together. There is a real team spirit on site and our local engineers have been included in key design decisions. That relationship has set a solid foundation for the Soft Landings period and eventual handover back to the business.”

The new Barnsley Custody suite is set to be completed in the autumn of 2016.

A specialist in offsite manufacture, SES recently became the first Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Services contractor (MEP) to achieve BRE Accredited BIM Level 2 Certification, one month ahead of the government’s public sector project compliance deadline.
