Residents are Knitwits for charity

A group of care home residents have their knitting needles at the ready to support dozens of charities in Hull and East Riding.

The group of inspirational ladies from Hull based Wilton Lodge, aged in their eighties and nineties, donate to local charity Knit-for-Nowt, which supports a range of causes in the Hull and East Riding area, including children’s and family services at local councils, Hull Women’s Aid and Hull Homeless Outreach.

Residents Violet Thurlow, 92, Vera Johnson, 89, Grace Beedle, 89, Thelma Davis, 88 and Claris Cooper, 95, and Margaret Heyson, 82, have also joined the local ‘Knitwits’ group, held twice a month at Columbus Church Hall on Laburnum Lane. The community group knit a range of blankets and clothes for over 50 local and international charities.

Penni Brown, chief executive at Hica Group said: “It is fantastic to see the ladies at Wilton Lodge still practicing their favourite pastimes but also donating to local charities and international causes.

“We encourage activities and leisure throughout our homes, including joining in local community clubs and initiatives like Knitwits. We believe that providing a good quality of life for residents includes keeping up with hobbies.

“We know that providing an active lifestyle helps to maintain healthy minds, whilst also helping to reduce the risk of distress which is common in those with dementia.”

The Hica Group is a not for profit organisation, which operates a portfolio of 20 residential care homes, five of which are for people with a learning disability, along with two retirement villages. The company also runs a home care service providing approximately 11,500 hours of support and care from four regional offices in the North of England.

Wilton Lodge currently employs 52 staff and is looking for further talented care staff members to join the team. Please check the The Hica Group website for more details on http://hica-uk.com/careers/
