Newcastle Brown pours from Tyne Brewery site

THE first pint of Newcastle Brown Ale on draught was poured in the city last night (July 12) – in the very spot where the famous beer was first brewed.

The Shark Club Gastro Bar at Newcastle’s Sandman Signature Hotel has become the first bar in the city to install Tyneside’s legendary drink on tap.

The 170-room hotel opened its doors in 2011 in a former 1960s office block which formed part of the Scottish & Newcastle Brewery. It was there where Newcastle Brown Ale was first created in 1927 and quickly became the drink of choice among local people.

The ale was brewed at Tyne Brewery for more than 70 years until Scottish & Newcastle announced the site’s closure, and the last bottles rolled off the production line in May 2005.

Now brewed in North Yorkshire, it has long been a popular tipple in draught form across the USA – and now Geordies too will be able to experience it straight from the pump.

The arrival of the cult beer comes as the Sandman Signature Hotel and Shark Club Gastro Bar in Newcastle prepares to celebrate its 5th birthday in September. A birthday party is in the final stages of planning with more to be revealed in the coming weeks.

“We are thrilled to become the first venue in Newcastle to get Brown Ale on draught, this is a major coup for Sandman Signature Hotels, Shark Club Gastro Bar and the city itself,” said Mark Davidson, Executive General Manager at Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle.

“Its arrival comes as we are preparing to mark our fifth birthday in September with what promises to be a big celebration event and we will be revealing further details about this very soon.”

Adrian Lowry, Executive General Manager at Shark Club Gastro Bar is proud to be the first venue in the city to offer the famous drink on draught.

“Newcastle Brown Ale is known all over the world and we have always been very proud to be here on such an historic site,” he said. “To be able to offer the first Newcastle Brown Ale on tap here in the city is an honour and we look forward to welcoming customers to try it for themselves.”

To mark the launch of Newcastle Brown Ale on draught, the hotel is offering an exclusive new overnight Brown Ale package. This includes one night bed and breakfast, a draught pint of Brown Ale served in the Shark Club, one bottle to take home and Newcastle Brown Ale merchandise. Prices start at £99 per person.
