New scheme to boost basic skills in Teesside

Redcar & Cleveland College has launched a new scheme to help people without qualifications prepare for study in higher education or the world of work.

The college’s new extended pre-access programme is targeted primarily at people who have not managed to get their GCSEs and who need basic qualifications to progress into their chosen career or university.

Running for 34 weeks from this September to June, the programme will equip students with a range of attributes including numeracy, literacy, writing skills and critical thinking, as well as knowledge of social psychology and equality & diversity. Students who successfully complete the course will then gain a Level 2 functional skills qualification, which will then provide a platform for progression onto a full access diploma and eventually university.

The student intake for September 2016 includes Donna Clark, who enrolled on the course with the longer-term aim of forging a successful career in mental health nursing.

Donna, 34, said: “This course is a fantastic way of getting qualifications under your belt so you can go on to study and work in a chosen specialism. The fact that the course is running over 34 weeks means that people can juggle their study with other commitments, such as family or a part-time job.”

Anne Clark, course leader for the pre-access course at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “We are delighted to launch this 34-week pre-access course, which will equip people with key skills and attributes that will enable them progress to university and employment in all sectors. As a college, our aim is to give people the best chance of forging a successful career and this course is a good first stepping stone that will help them achieve this goal.”
