Liverpool city region visitor economy now worth £4bn

The visitor economy across the Liverpool city region now supports more than 50k jobs and generates an income of over £4bn, according to new data.

Figures for 2015 have revealed that Liverpool now attracts in excess of 56.5m day visitors, with the number of staying visitors rising to nearly 5m.

The research, commissioned by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), also showed that the total number of those in employment in the area rose by 4% last year, growing from 49,006 in 2014 to 50,994 in 2015

Liverpool alone saw the fiscal impact of its visitor economy rise from £2.53bn in 2014 to £2.72bn in 2015.

Elsewhere, the survey ranked Liverpool as the sixth most visited UK city for overseas visitors, which was the position reached in 2014. The number of business visitors coming to the City Region from overseas also demonstrated growth, rising year on year by 23% to 179k.

The head of visitor economy for the LEP, Peter Sandman, said: “These figures are not only encouraging but also show a confidence in the city region.

“The significant increase in visitor spend reflects the quality we have to offer across the board covering both culture and leisure.”

He added: “The rise in visitor economy employment is particularly positive as well as visitors coming for business – a market with potential for even more growth.”
