Demolition of Rochdale’s Telegraph House to mark ‘end of an era’
The last stage of demolition to make way for the new Rochdale Riverside retail and leisure scheme is due to get underway next week.
Contractors are moving in on Monday (25 July) to begin the four-month process of ripping out and dismantling Telegraph House on Baillie Street.
The Tribunal Service, the building’s final tenant, has now relocated to its new new home at the old Post Office on the Esplanade.
The work to bring down the 1960s building is expected to dramatically alter Rochdale’s skyline.
Rochdale Borough Council Leader Cllr Richard Farnell said: “This marks the end of an era and the beginning of an exciting new one.
“It’s great to know that by 2019, where Telegraph House once stood, we will have new shops and restaurants.”
He added: “It’s a great time to be in Rochdale. We’re undertaking a £250m transformation of our town centre and this is the final piece of the jigsaw.”
Salford-based Connell Brothers Ltd, which cleared the old bus station and municipal offices in 2013, has been tasked with demolishing Telegraph House.
Elsewhere, the scheme’s developer Genr8 Developments has commissioned site investigations to help inform the detailed planning application on the scheme due to be submitted later this year.
