Seago Line adds new container ship to Liverpool2 cargo service

Seago Line has expanded its feeder service from Liverpool with a new vessel.

Seago, a subsidiary of global trade and shipping company Maersk, has introduced the 168m-long container ship Independent Accord to its new cargo route between Algeciras in southern spain, Liverpool and Dublin.

Launched in April, the service was established to create direct cargo connections to and from the North West of England, Ireland and onwards to the Mediterranean, linking the region with trade in North and West Africa.

Maersk Group’s return to Liverpool in the spring was the first time the firm had used the port for UK cargoes in more than a decade. The route is also Maersk’s first ever direct connection with Dublin.

The Independent Accord has now replaced the 1,100 TEU Antwerp, which has so far operated the route from the Liverpool2 terminal.

The commercial director of port operator Peel Ports, Patrick Walters, said: “We were very pleased that Seago Line and Maersk returned to Liverpool, signalling their confidence in the port, especially in the run up to the opening of Liverpool2.

“We’re even more delighted that this has proven to be a solid business move so quickly after the service started.”

He continued: “It is another sign that industry-leading carriers are increasingly convinced of the arguments around the benefits of shipping closer to market via the North West.

“We look forward to helping Seago Line and its customers to continue reducing costs, carbon emissions and congestion in their supply chains.”

Robert Clegg, Seago Line’s general manager for the UK and Ireland, said: “We are very happy to be introducing a new vessel to the route so soon after we created this new connection to Liverpool, expanding our product portfolio for markets in the UK and Ireland.

Robert added: “We are also able to offer our customers in Liverpool’s hinterland access to South European and North African markets via Seago Line as a complementary addition to our existing offer.”
