Wyke pupil wins birdhouse design competition
A young girl from Appleton Academy has been named the winner of a David Wilson Homes competition to design a birdhouse for its local Bluebell Woods development in Wyke. The winning entry, which was designed by Amelia Szynalska, will now be constructed by students at Leeds College of Building, and erected in a showhome garden at the luxury housing development.
The competition, which encouraged local children from the school to design a viable home for local wildlife, is an extension of David Wilson Homes’ on going partnership with the RSPB, which saw the housebuilder promise to construct more wildlife-friendly housing developments, in order to give nature a new home within its communities. As the country’s urban wildlife struggles, with 60% of plants and animals facing decline, the agreement and campaigns such as this are aimed at helping to boost local biodiversity.
Amelia, aged seven, submitted a creative design, and was selected as the winner out of 30 entries from Appleton Academy, winning £50 of arts and crafts vouchers, and will soon see her work incorporated in the new development.
Joanne Clayton, Director of Teaching and Learning at Appleton Academy, commented: “We’re thrilled to have been involved with David Wilson Homes to help design a birdhouse for its Bluebell Woods development. All the children worked very hard to design creative birdhouses, and it’s great that Amelia’s design will be brought to life and placed at the development to give local wildlife a home.”
Dan Hardcastle, Sales Manager at David Wilson Homes’ Bluebell Woods development, said: “We’re always looking for ways to involve the local community when developing our sites, so we thought it would be great to let Appleton Academy’s pupils design something that we could incorporate into our Bluebell Woods development. Our partnership with the RSPB showcases our commitment to preserving the areas in which we build and the fact that the students at Leeds College of Building have kindly agreed to construct the birdhouse means that Amelia’s design will be present in Wyke for years to come.”
Set in the charming neighbourhood of Wyke, Bluebell Woods benefits from an excellent range of local amenities, including supermarkets, traditional shops, pubs and restaurants, whilst its convenient location close to the M62 makes the new homes an ideal commuter base for travel to Leeds, Bradford or Huddersfield. Prices at the site start from £199,995.
