Jones Bros completes North Yorks coastline wind farm project

Leading civil engineering company and renewables specialist Jones Bros has successfully completed a major wind farm project on north Yorkshire’s coastline.

Fraisthorpe wind farm, near the coastal resort of Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was energised a day ahead of schedule and is now generating enough clean energy to power almost 22,500 homes.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, which carried out the 12-month project on behalf of client BayWa r.e, also constructed a substation, high voltage switch yard, 5,000 kilometres of off site underground cabling, which included micro drilling and pipe jacking under the Yorkshire coast line railway. The project also involved constructing internal service roads and a new site access.

The wind farm features powerful 3.3MW Vestas V112 turbines, with a total capacity of 29.7MW and was the first ever order placed in the UK market for the V112.

The project will also save 48,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year.

James Lockwood, Jones Bros project manager, said: “The scheme has gone extremely well and also provided a great boost for contractors in the area, as well as several of our apprentices who gained valuable work experience.”

The wind farm is anticipated to generate electricity for 25 years and will support a community benefit fund.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, a family firm based in Ruthin, North Wales, has developed considerable expertise in constructing wind farms in a wide range of terrains and environments across the UK.

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 350 people, Jones Bros has grown rapidly in the last decade. It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
