Creating a unique online dating profile can be a little daunting, especially if you aren’t in the habit of talking highly about yourself—there is a fine line between highlighting your best qualities and being conceited (or worse, sounding desperate). We’ve asked the members of a popular dating website what components of a profile makes someone stand out from the rest on a totally free dating site. Here’s what they had to say:

Ask your friends for help. Your friends know you better than yourself, and when you ask them to tell you what are your best traits, they’ll be more than happy to oblige. Be careful when telling them that you are trying a totally free dating site because they may want to create your profile for you!

Avoid the stereotypical clichés.

Even if you are the type of person who enjoys long walks on the beach or dinner by candlelight, you might want to rethink actually saying so on your profile. Instead, come up with something interesting that will grab someone’s attention and want to talk to you about it.

Choose some action photographs.

Instead of making all of your profile pictures of you staring into the camera, smiling like you’re being forced to, why not choose a few action photos. These action shots don’t even have to show your face! You’ll want to select a photograph where you are doing something that you’re passionate about, and you’re having fun doing it. When you have a few of these photos (even as your main picture!), you’ll see an increase in how many messages you receive.

Always stay positive.

We don’t care if you are the Grumpy Bear in human form, your profile should be positive and insightful. People aren’t too keen on getting into a romantic relationship with someone who has a negative outlook on love or life in general. If while you are chatting with someone and you come to a topic where you are less than positive about, ask to change subjects and try not to let it sour your mood.

Always be honest.

Honesty is the best policy, there’s no doubt about that. Just imagine how awkward it would be when you are on a date with someone and you are caught in a lie? Think about it, why put yourself into that sort of position in the first place? We say, avoid all possible confrontation and just be honest from the get-go.

Be specific when you are talking about what you are looking for. Whether you are discussing your hobbies, your goals in life, or what you had for breakfast, when you’re trying to win the affection of someone on a totally free dating site, you’re going to have to be specific. There are millions of singles who enjoy music, but if you fancy electronic music with a jazz feel, you’ll want to say that. Maybe someone with the same taste will stumble on your profile, and that could be the very thing that draws you two together. People love details, and your profile is no exception.
