Passenger numbers surge at London Luton Airport ahead of expansion

The number of passengers who flew out of London Luton Airport (LLA) in July has rose by an impressive 15.4% compared to last year, as the airport plots a number of expansion projects to support growing demand.

Over 1.5m passed through LLA last month, representing significant year-on-year growth for the regional airport which is quietly expanding its operations while larger rivals Gatwick and Heathrow continue to argue the case for a new runway.

The transport hub is now targeting 18m passengers per year by 2020 and to support this has embarked on an ambitious £110m transformation programme which is set to increase capacity by 50%.

Nick Barton, Chief Executive Officer of LLA, commented that with the summer season now in full swing, today’s heartening figures attested to the growth of the airport which sits 25 miles north of Central London.

LLA also hopes to take advantage of its relative proximity to the capital with a new £200m light rail link, which was unveiled in April, that LLA claims will reduce travel times to the airport terminal from London St Pancras to less than 30 minutes.

Commenting on their upgrade plans, Nick added: “In the longer term, our £110 million redevelopment project will expand our security and immigration areas, introduce a host of new shopping and dining options and deliver major transport upgrades make travel through LLA quicker and easier.”
