San Carlo Group bringing new 15-chef Italian eatery to Covent Garden

UK restaurant group San Carlo is expanding its line-up of restaurants in the capital with a new Italian-themed restaurant in Covent Garden.

Fumo, which opens this September, is to be housed within a 6,000 sq ft property at 37 St Martin’s Lane and joins San Carlo’s family-run Signor Sassi and Cicchetti restaurants in Knightsbridge and Piccadilly respectively.

Featuring 130 covers, the new all-day eatery will serve a season Italian small plates crafted by a team of 15 Italian chefs under the stewardship of San Carlo’s executive chefs Filippo Pagani and Franco Bellamusto.

Following the announcement, Marcello Distefano, Managing Director of San Carlo Group, commented: “This opening displays our intent to build on the success of our first Covent Garden location. We feel we have landed the ideal site to develop our presence in the West End and central London and we’re looking forward to opening soon.”

The deal was brokered by leisure property agent Shelley Sandzer, who concluded a similar deal for Monohon Ramen’s first permanent London site earlier in the week.

Nick Weir from the agents believes the site is perfect for the restaurant group’s expansion plans, and ideally situated to take advantage of the new Night Tube service.

He said: “This site struck us as being perfect for San Carlo’s expansion plans, located in an area with high footfall throughout the day that will also benefit from the expected growth in the nighttime economy following the tube network running 24 hours.

“Shelley Sandzer’s ability to procure these kind of prime sites for our clients puts us at the forefront of leasing within the leisure property industry.”

Manchester-headquartered San Carlo Group have slowly been growing their UK presence in recent years, with restaurants across the country in cities such as Manchester, Leicester and Leeds.

The group also operates restaurants in Bangkok and Qatar.
