Super Gran Set To Soar in Tiger Moth For 95th Birthday

A great grandmother who repaired planes during World War Two will fly in a De Havilland Tiger Moth for her 95th birthday.

Eunice Roe, a resident at Ashbourne Lodge care home, part of The Milford Care Group, turns 95 on October 8.

Her son Matthew came up with the idea for the special flight after seeing the Tiger Moth flying over Ashbourne at weekends. She will go up in the Tiger Moth from Ashbourne Airfield on Sunday October 9.

Eunice, who was born in Derby and later lived in Allestree, Milford, Wirksworth and Duffield with her late husband Joseph, said: “We used to repair aeroplanes, we would be inside the craft putting patches on the planes and making them air worthy again. Some of them were bombers with a gunner’s turret, I was appalled at how small it was, the men must have had to fold themselves up to get in there.”

Eunice, who has three sons, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, has no idea how many planes she helped repair over the war years because there were so many of them.

Speaking about the impending flight, she said: “I am a bit apprehensive, I’m not the bravest person but it should be exciting. I hope they don’t do a loop-the-loop, if they do I hope they strap me in well.”

Sam Palmer at The Milford Care Group, said “Eunice has been a resident at Ashbourne Lodge for some time now and she is a wonderful lady. We are delighted that she will be taking this flight on October 9th and the staff from Ashbourne Lodge will be cheering her on!”

Her son Matthew said: “We were quite lucky to get a slot in the Tiger Moth because they were fully booked until the end of the year and squeezed us in.”

Speaking about making it to the age of 95, Eunice said: “Nobody is more surprised than me. I’m not from a family that live long. I must be doing something either right or wrong.”
