Asda Billingham Celebrates 50th Birthday
News Release | September 2016
Long-serving colleagues both past and present from Asda Billingham enjoyed a fantastic day on Friday, as they celebrated the store’s 50th birthday with a ‘bake off’ themed tea party.
The Billingham store invited its longest-serving colleagues and store managers from throughout its 50 year history to take part in the milestone celebration. Many of the colleagues in attendance had worked at the store or for the company for 25 or more years.
One former Asda Billingham colleague who attended the event, Neil Breadwell, started working at the store aged just 16, and recently retired after 44 years of service. Similarly, Barbra Matthews who worked at the store for 43 years was part of the celebrations. Barbra, along with her colleagues, reminisced about the day they had started working in the Asda store, and how much the store had changed over the last half century.
The celebrations included afternoon tea, and saw some of the eldest colleagues taking part in a taste test of the freshly baked goods that are currently sold at the instore bakery.
Kevin Braxen, a replacement section manager at Asda Billingham, said: “This is such an exciting day for the store. We are celebrating 50 years of hard work from all our colleagues, past and present. We wanted to make sure all of our team realise just how grateful we are of their services to the store and to our customers.”
Community life champion at Asda Billingham, Roselyn Chapman, said: “The team here are just like family and over the last 50 years, the store has definitely become a part of the local community. We’ve built great connections and friendships with our customers – some of them even bring in homemade goodies for colleagues! It was lovely to come together to celebrate the past half century of the store with the colleagues who have helped make the store such a special place to work.”
The 50th celebration is just one of the ways Asda is able to recognise and thank the efforts of both current and long-serving colleagues.
