SES delivering £43 million M&E project at DNRC

Leading national engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services, has secured a £43 million contract on the new £300 million Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) at the Stanford Hall estate near Loughborough.

Working alongside main contractor Interserve, the international support services and construction group, SES is providing full mechanical and electrical (M&E) services to deliver a purpose-built, state of the art clinical facility for the Armed Forces when it becomes operational in 2018.

The concept for the national facility recognises that rehabilitation of those disabled and unable to work in civilian life is a major policy area within Government and that the expertise that exists within Defence medicine could be shared for the benefit of the Nation as a whole.

Stanford Hall includes not only a 21st century version of Headley Court in Surrey, but also the potential to develop a national clinical rehabilitation facility to benefit the general population.

The new location was a strategic decision to ensure proximity to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where returning armed forces personnel are initially treated and also to provide easy access for services personnel and their families from around the UK.

David Mason, Executive Business Director, SES said: “We have delivered numerous projects with Interserve over many years and have formed an inclusive and collaborative working relationship with them to ensure the delivery of a truly world-class facility.

“The project involves highly complex site logistics, based around the refurbishment of the grade 2* listed Stanford Hall with over 20 separate new builds in close proximity and up to 1,000 workers on site at any given time. It also lies in registered parkland where there are numerous restrictions and planning conditions that must be adhered to. All of this requires a managed and considerate approach to the installation of new M&E services.

“By using our market-leading off-site manufacturing facilities at SES PRISM extensively on this project, we are able to move as much activity off site as possible meaning that we can make significant time and cost savings as well as create a much safer working environment.”

SES is also working with the Career Transition Partnership, which helps to resettle ex-military personnel into new employment roles, to provide employment opportunities to former servicemen and women during the project.

Dave Mason adds: “This project is not just about building a new facility, we are proud to be able to offer a number of employment opportunities to former service-men and women as part of this project including logistics, progress, quality and monitoring.”

The Defence establishment will be operated by the Ministry of Defence when it opens in 2018.
