Jobs to go at Arup as Brexit slowdown puts 90 positions at risk

Construction and design firm Arup is set to shrink its London workforce after Brexit uncertainty has slowed construction work in the capital.

The firm, which currently employs around 900 staff, began a 30-day consultation period with staff last week blaming Brexit uncertainty for putting the brakes on major construction projects in London and elsewhere.

According to Architect’s Journal, up to 90 positions are at risk in the firm’s Building division, representing almost 10% of its workforce, as delays and cancellations of commercial projects put a strain on the practice.

A spokesperson for Arup said: “We are operating in a period of uncertainty in the UK economy following the referendum vote in June.

“Arup – as with any responsible business – needs to ensure its long-term business health and it is essential that we match our shape with future market requirements.

“Our people are our greatest asset and it is with regret that the difficult decision has been taken to implement a programme of limited redundancies during the third quarter of 2016 in our Buildings London sector.”
