Work commences on Peel Ports’ flagship HGV refuelling bunker

The construction of a huge new 24-hour refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) at the Port of Liverpool is now underway.

To mark the beginning of the work, a ground-breaking event was held and attended by senior representatives of the site’s owner, Peel Ports, and Certas Energy, the company appointed to manage the facility.

Planning permission for the project was granted at the end of September.

Peel said it considers its Liverpool port, as one of the largest and busiest in the UK, to be the “perfect location” for a new HGV refuelling station.

Once complete, the new facility will have capacity for up to eight HGVs to refuel at the same time using high speed pumps supported by advanced data collection, fuel monitoring equipment and filtration systems.

It is hoped the facility’s location at the main entrance to the Royal Seaforth Container Terminal, next to the new Liverpool2 deep-water container terminal, will allow logistics firms to ramp up efficiency by eliminating the need for drivers to make unnecessary journeys to refuel.

HGV operators will instead be able to refuel upon entering or leaving the port.

Certas Energy director Paul Williams said: “We’re extremely pleased to start the building and construction works.

“In line with our strategy to develop a national network of refuelling locations, this is another major milestone in reaching our goal. For Certas Energy this is flagship development designed specifically to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding port.”

He added: “The continued development of the Port of Liverpool meant it was an easy decision to enter into partnership with Peel Ports Group.”

The HGV refuelling station is due for completion in early 2017
