Lancashire organisations team up for ‘Girl Talk’
Female sport participation across Lancashire will be on track after a Lancashire Sport Partnership (LSP) ‘Girl Talk’ event held on Thursday (6 October 2016).
Hosted at David Lloyd in Chorley, the fun and informative event kicked off at 9am with a variety of sporting, local authority and community organisations from across the county attending to learn why they should engage women and girls in sport and the best ways to go about it.
National campaigns such as ‘This Girl Can’ and ‘Go Where Women Are’ have helped to encourage more women to get active. Now LSP aims to dovetail these learnings from this work to improve female participation across Lancashire businesses and communities.
Adrian Leather, chief executive of LSP, said: “Research shows that less than a third of women regularly take part in physical activity, but that 75% do want to be more active.
“Insecurities about weight, fitness levels, sporting ability and demands on their time can all be factors deterring women from getting active. To counter that we have held the ‘Girl Talk’ networking event to get community organisations involved, helping them to understand the best ways to involve women in sports and physical activities.”
‘Girl Talk’ took place during Women’s Sport Week and involved fun and informative talks by representatives from Sport England, Girl Guiding NW England and Preston City Council discussing the activities they provide and how these have encouraged increased participation. The aim was to encourage the delegates to host similar friendly and fun opportunities to help women get active.
Beth Kay, relationship manager at LSP who organised the event said: “We are so pleased to see such a wealth of organisations here today. It will make a huge difference to Lancashire’s women for these organisations to provide even more opportunities for participation. It’s been a very worthwhile and fun day and we hope to host many similar events in the future.”
