Seddon to build Government-backed nuclear training facility at Lakes College

North West builder and developer Seddon has begun work on a multi-million pound facility for the National College for Nuclear.

The centre, which will serve as the training organisation’s Northern hub, will be located at Lakes College in Workington and is one of two purpose-built sites being developed to train 7,000 people by 2020.

Seddon’s work on the project includes the construction of two laboratories, a preparation room, a project workspace area, six group room facilities, a digital consulting area and two virtual reality suites.

The Bolton-based company will also create an open reception and heart space learning area with fixed ICT on the ground and first floors, including a café.

Seddon’s regional director for the North, Ed Wootton, said: “We are working very closely with Lakes College to bring its vision for the National College for Nuclear to life.

“It’s fantastic to see significant investment being placed into training the next generation of highly skilled workers for the UK’s vital nuclear energy sector.”

He added: “The facilities we’re building will help to place education in Cumbria on a world stage.”

The principal of Lakes College, Chris Nattress, commented: “We are delighted that work has begun on the National College for Nuclear facility here at Lakes College.

“It represents a lot of hard work by many people, and we’re looking forward to seeing this superb building complete.”

He continued: “The hub will play a huge role in the future of nuclear, both here in Cumbria, and on a national scale, and Lakes College is proud to be a part of it.”

Management and property consultant AA Projects will project manage the scheme, providing services such as cost consultancy and advice on strategic property, funding and health and safety.

The Department for Business, Industry and Skills, which has since been replaced with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, invested £15m to create the Cumbria training facility and its sister site at Bridgwater College in Somerset.
